Stainless Steel and Dissimilar Metal Interfaces

A stainless component rarely exists alone. Record the adjoining metals, moisture exposure and fixing detail so the project team can review the interface.

Identify the whole connection

List the stainless part, support material, fastener and any washer, isolator or sealant. Include the service environment. A drawing that labels only the visible stainless face does not describe the complete connection.

Review moisture and drainage

BSSA highlights crevices, moisture traps and some dissimilar-metal fasteners as concerns in external applications. Ask the designer to review whether the proposed joint can retain moisture and whether separation or drainage measures are appropriate for that specific assembly.

Keep responsibilities explicit

The fabricator should know which connection components are included and which are by others. Obtain compatibility confirmation for the selected materials and follow the engineered detail. A generic statement that stainless is durable is not a substitute for reviewing an exposed connection.

Put the detail to work.

A stainless cover is fixed to a different-metal support in an exposed area. Provide the support and fastener information to the responsible designer along with the wetting conditions. Ask for the approved interface detail rather than selecting an isolating product by guesswork. Keep that detail in the supplier scope and installation instructions. Changing a concealed fastener can still change the connection being reviewed.

Before you enquire

  • Include support material in the RFQ.
  • Avoid unreviewed fastener substitutions.
  • Check drainage and maintenance access.
