Why Stainless Colour Looks Different in Photographs

A photograph is a communication aid, not a physical colour standard. Use consistent lighting and labelled references when reviewing decorative stainless remotely.

Record how the image was made

Ask for unfiltered photographs with the sample code visible. Include an overall view and a closer view of the surface. Avoid judging a sample from an image whose exposure has been adjusted only to make the metal look more dramatic.

Compare under repeatable conditions

View competing samples together and keep their orientation consistent. If the finish is sensitive to angle, show more than one normal viewing position. Rimex documents lighting-dependent tone changes for its ColourTex range; that example reinforces the need to confirm behaviour for the specific proposed finish.

Use photographs for the right decisions

Remote images can help shortlist texture and reveal obvious damage. Final colour acceptance should refer to a physical sample or agreed mockup. Keep the approved reference ID in subsequent inspection photographs so the review remains traceable.

Put the detail to work.

A sample appears warmer in one phone photograph than in another. Before rejecting it, request a comparison made in one frame with the retained reference and consistent orientation. Check whether the images use different lighting or automatic adjustments. Use the result to decide what needs physical review, not to declare an exact colour tolerance from screen pixels. Keep the final decision tied to the agreed sample.

Before you enquire

  • Avoid filters and colour enhancement.
  • Label each image with the sample code.
  • Confirm the installed viewing conditions.
