No.4 and Hairline: Specify the Grain You Want

Brushed stainless steel is a family of appearances. A purchase order needs a retained texture reference and a clear direction on the part drawing.

Separate the name from the appearance

No.4 commonly identifies a mechanically polished finish. Hairline is frequently used commercially for a longer directional appearance. Do not assume that either term establishes an exact texture, grit or roughness across suppliers; obtain the proposed producer specification.

Judge a joint, not just a sample

Place two samples side by side in their proposed installed direction. Rotate one and compare the apparent tone. For a wall or lift entrance, this simple exercise helps reveal why individually acceptable sheets can look inconsistent when assembled with different orientations.

Order by finished component

Include arrows on the visible faces, not only on the parent sheet. A folded return and its front face may need separate clarification. State whether the fabricator may rotate parts while nesting. If a sample differs from the wording in the quotation, resolve the discrepancy before release.

Put the detail to work.

Two brushed samples look close when placed separately on a desk, but a difference appears when they meet at a vertical joint. Keep the samples together, align the intended grain and review them in the installation orientation. If the joint remains visually inconsistent, choose one controlling reference or obtain an approved matching set. Do not solve the problem by renaming both samples satin in the order.

Before you enquire

  • Approve texture in installed lighting.
  • Confirm the visible face after bending.
  • Carry grain direction into packing labels.
