Identify the construction
Liquid metal coating systems are applied to a substrate; LIQMET describes its process as an applied metallisation finish on various surfaces. Stainless sheet is a metal product that may be cut and formed. A similar colour does not make the constructions interchangeable.
Compare the complete supplied item
For coating, ask about substrate, preparation, coating system, protective layers and application responsibility. For sheet, ask about alloy, thickness, finish, joints and support. Compare the completed component and its maintenance requirements, not only the surface sample.
Keep claims system-specific
Request evidence for the actual proposed build-up where fire, outdoor exposure or durability matters. Do not apply a coating manufacturer statement to another product. SSSTEEL treats this as a material-selection guide; supply feasibility must be reviewed against the project brief.
Think about edges and joints early
An applied finish may follow a prepared substrate geometry, whereas sheet metal is fabricated into a geometry with defined bends, joints or welded details. Ask to see an actual edge and corner for each proposed route. The difference can be more important than the colour of a flat sample. Neither route should be selected solely because a photograph appears seamless.
Maintenance belongs in the comparison
Ask who supplies the care instructions and how local damage is addressed. A coating repair may require a system-specific applicator or finish process; a fabricated sheet component may require part replacement or specialist refinishing. Obtain the actual proposed approach and any limitations. Do not assume that two metallic surfaces can be polished, cleaned or repaired with the same products.
A neutral enquiry description
Describe the intended geometry, visible appearance and service location before naming a preferred route. Include a drawing of the supporting construction and state whether it is already fixed. Request a clearly labelled proposal for each feasible option. Supplier-specific claims about outdoor use, fire performance or coating thickness must remain attached to that exact product and build-up, not transferred to all materials described as liquid metal.
| Decision | Put this in writing |
|---|---|
| Coating route | Specify substrate, preparation and applied system. |
| Sheet route | Specify grade, thickness, fabrication and support. |
| Approval | Review a representative finished component. |
Put the detail to work.
A designer proposes a metallic finish over shaped joinery while a supplier offers folded stainless sheet. Compare the complete constructions, including substrate, joints, edges and care. Either may require further design work to achieve the intended appearance. Do not substitute one based only on a similar colour sample. Request the required system evidence and confirm supply feasibility before making a project commitment.
Before you enquire
- Clarify which material system is being quoted.
- Obtain system-specific care information.
- Keep performance evidence tied to the exact construction.

A liquid metal coating is an applied finish on a substrate, not solid stainless sheet.
