Selecting Stainless Finishes for High-Touch Areas

A lobby panel and an untouched ceiling have different everyday demands. Review touch, cleaning and likely damage before choosing a finish for a busy interior.

Map the contact zone

Identify areas reached by hands, bags, trolleys and cleaning equipment. A decorative finish chosen from a small sample may look different after regular use. Compare candidates where they will be touched, rather than evaluating only a pristine surface under showroom lighting.

Test the maintenance routine

Ask the proposed supplier for compatible cleaning instructions. Use the intended cloth and cleaner on a spare sample and review the result with the design team. A coating described as anti-fingerprint should not be treated as proof against scratches or a substitute for cleaning.

Consider the replacement strategy

Look at how a damaged piece could be removed, reordered and matched. A practical panel layout may isolate wear-prone areas without changing the overall finish concept. Include those pieces in the part schedule so future replacements can be identified reliably.

Put the detail to work.

A lift lobby uses the same decorative finish on a ceiling and on panels beside the call buttons. Review the hand-contact panels separately with handled samples and the intended cleaning routine. The ceiling approval does not answer how the lower panels will look in daily use. If different surfaces are selected, give them separate finish codes and review their relationship together rather than pretending they are identical.

Before you enquire

  • Review both clean and handled samples.
  • Record maintenance expectations.
  • Ask how visible damage should be assessed.
