Define the finished outline
Show the intended diameter or profile, segment count and clearance from the structure. For a non-circular shape, provide the appropriate dimensional information rather than an assumed radius. Identify which dimensions are design intent and which are verified site measurements.
Record changes along the height
Survey relevant levels and note offsets, projections or changes in the receiving structure. Include the base and ceiling interfaces. A single circumference reading does not describe every condition that a tall cover may encounter.
Agree the manufacturing reference
Send the survey and drawings for fabricator review, then approve a released geometry. Clarify joint allowances and support through the responsible designer. Where appearance is critical, use a representative curved sample to review the selected finish and seam.
| Decision | Put this in writing |
|---|---|
| Profile | Define the finished shape and segment arrangement. |
| Survey | Record reference levels and irregularities. |
| Release | Identify dimensions approved for manufacture. |
Put the detail to work.
A round-looking existing column varies slightly along its height. Provide the survey at relevant levels and distinguish the desired outer profile from the structure beneath. Ask the designer and fabricator to agree the resulting clearance and segment geometry. A single circumference measurement should not be converted into a manufacturing instruction without that review, especially where the cover meets fixed head and base details.
Before you enquire
- Distinguish structural and finished dimensions.
- Show base and head interfaces.
- Keep segment marks on the packing schedule.
