Describe the micro-location
Identify whether the part faces prevailing weather, sits under an overhang or remains inside an open lobby. Include photographs of surrounding conditions. Two components on the same building can experience different levels of washing and contamination.
Ask for a coordinated recommendation
Request a proposal covering alloy, surface and detailing rather than a single grade label. Outokumpu notes that finish roughness, geometry and cleaning affect atmospheric performance. For severe conditions, ask an appropriately qualified designer or material specialist to assess the system.
Make maintenance part of procurement
Record who can access the surface and how cleaning will be carried out. If a proposed detail traps debris or cannot be reached, resolve it before fabrication. Keep the maintenance assumptions with the approved material selection so later operators understand the basis of the choice.
| Decision | Put this in writing |
|---|---|
| Location | Describe shelter, salts and wetting. |
| Detail | Identify joints, drainage and inaccessible areas. |
| Maintenance | Record cleaning access and responsibility. |
Put the detail to work.
A sheltered entrance canopy receives little natural washing while nearby exposed panels are regularly rain-washed. Identify the sheltered components separately in the materials brief. Ask the reviewer to consider contamination, detail geometry and cleaning access for each area. Do not assume one building-wide material label describes every micro-location. Retain the maintenance assumptions with the selected solution so future operators know which areas need attention.
Before you enquire
- Supply site photographs and exposure notes.
- Avoid unconditional rust-free requirements.
- Obtain the recommendation for the complete application.
