Ask for a precise designation
Use the grade designation and relevant material specification rather than an informal quality label. Request the proposed producer documentation and traceability method before placing the order. Different alloys should be quoted as distinct alternatives, not described as interchangeable stainless.
Match the verification to the question
ASSDA explains that test selection depends on what needs to be distinguished. A magnet or visual comparison cannot establish a full alloy identity. Where verification matters, agree an appropriate analysis with a competent testing provider and clarify the limitations of the method.
Link the result to the delivered parts
A report is only useful when the tested material can be connected to the shipment. Ask how sheet or batch identifiers are retained through cutting and fabrication. Keep verification separate from colour and workmanship acceptance, since each answers a different question.
| Decision | Put this in writing |
|---|---|
| Specification | Record exact grade and governing material requirement. |
| Testing | Agree method, sampling and responsibility. |
| Traceability | Connect results to the delivered batch or parts. |
Put the detail to work.
The purchase specification requires 304, while a supplier proposes a lower-priced alternative without clear identification. Request a revised offer naming the exact proposed grade and keep it separate from the compliant base offer. If independent verification is required, agree the method before finishing obscures material markings. A polished sample that resembles the approved one should not close an unresolved material-substitution question.
Before you enquire
- Reject appearance-only grade assurances.
- Check identifiers on documents and packing.
- Resolve proposed substitutions before cutting.
